We've all been there. You're shopping for someone, scrolling through websites or walking through stores, trying to find something they'll actually like. Eventually, you settle on something, wrap it up, and hope for the best.
And sometimes, that gift ends up in a drawer, a closet, or a donation pile before the next holiday season rolls around.
With the holidays approaching, I've been thinking about what makes a gift worth giving. I don't think it necessarily comes down to how much you spend. Some of the best gifts are the ones that show someone actually put some thought into them.
It's the Thought That Makes the Difference
There's a big difference between buying someone a gift and finding something that feels like it was made for them. Maybe it's connected to a hobby they love, a career they're proud of, a memory you share, or something they've accomplished.
That's where personalized gifts stand out. And personalization doesn't always mean engraving someone's name on something. Sometimes it's choosing the right material, incorporating a meaningful symbol, or creating something that reflects an important part of their life.
I've made military coin displays, flag cases, pens, and other custom pieces where the real value wasn't necessarily the wood or hardware. It was what the finished product represented to the person receiving it.
Practical Doesn't Have to Mean Boring
I'm a big believer that a good gift doesn't have to sit on a shelf collecting dust. Some of my favorite things to make are products people can actually use.
A handcrafted pen might become someone's everyday writing instrument. A coffee scoop could become part of their morning routine. A cutting board might be used for family dinners, and a cocktail smoker could become part of a Friday evening tradition.
These aren't necessarily complicated products, but when they're made with quality materials and chosen specifically for someone, they become more than just another item around the house.
There's something pretty cool about giving someone a gift they'll reach for regularly and think about the person who gave it to them.
Some Gifts Tell a Bigger Story
One of the things I enjoy most about custom woodworking is creating something that represents a person's experiences.
Military retirement gifts are a great example. A challenge coin display isn't simply a place to store coins. Those coins can represent deployments, assignments, accomplishments, friendships, and years of service. A custom flag case can hold something that carries a tremendous amount of personal significance.
The same idea applies outside the military. A personalized gift might celebrate a wedding, graduation, retirement, anniversary, or another important milestone.
When you can connect a gift to someone's story, it becomes something they may want to keep long after the occasion has passed.
Giving Something Worth Keeping
I know handmade gifts aren't the answer for every person or every occasion. Sometimes a gift card is exactly what someone wants, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But when you're looking for something a little more personal, I think it's worth considering a gift that was made with a particular person in mind.
That's one of the things I enjoy about BourbonSmoke Woodworking. Whether I'm making a custom military display or turning a piece of hardwood into a pen, I like knowing that the finished product might become part of someone's everyday life or commemorate something important to them.
As the holiday shopping season gets underway, I'd encourage you to think beyond what's popular, what's on sale, or what can arrive tomorrow.
Think about the person you're buying for. What matters to them? What do they enjoy? What would make them smile when they open it?
Because the best gifts aren't always the ones that cost the most.
They're the ones that make someone realize you were thinking specifically about them.
